Did you know that the ideals of the Knights Templar are still alive today, but with a radically different weapon?
Meet OSMTH (Ordo Supremus Militaris Templi Hierosolymitani), a Sovereign Military Order of the Temple of Jerusalem. While they draw inspiration from the medieval Order founded in 1118, OSMTH is a modern, 19th-century successor dedicated not to warfare, but to peace, diplomacy, and humanitarian aid.
Here is a quick overview of who they are and what they stand for in 2025.
Who is OSMTH?
OSMTH is an international, ecumenical Christian organization registered in Geneva, Switzerland. Crucially, they are a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in Special Consultative Status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).
Note: OSMTH is not a direct organizational descendant of the medieval Templars, nor is it part of Freemasonry.
The Mission: “The Word, Not the Sword”
Unlike their medieval counterparts, OSMTH explicitly rejects violence. They live by the motto that “the word, not the sword, is the weapon of modern Templars.”
The Order strictly condemns any individuals or groups that use Templar symbols to promote extremism or hate. Instead, they focus on:
- Bridge-Building: Facilitating dialogue between religious leaders in conflict zones.
- Advocacy: Working with the UN to condemn hate speech and promote tolerance (championing UN Resolution 2686).
- Humanitarian Aid: Supporting “Christians at Risk” in the Middle East, disaster relief (such as the 2023 earthquake in Syria/Türkiye), and clean water projects.
Values & Membership
OSMTH is not an elitist club for aristocrats. Its members come from all walks of life—from shopworkers and engineers to bishops and generals.
United by the Regula Moderna (Modern Rule), members strive for:
- Honesty, integrity, and civility.
- Service to the poor and unjustly treated.
- Respect for all strands of humankind.
